Project based learning in elementary general music

Jeannine K-5 General, Choral, Band teacher in Poughkeepsie, NY

I would like to discuss with other teachers the ways in which they have used project based learning in their elementary music classes. What grade levels, what types of projects, how did they manage time, elements of the lessons, etc. I want to get into deeper learning with my students but see my students only once, sometimes twice a week. Looking for any guidance here. Thanks!

Hi Jeannine,

If you have not already visited Phil Greco's Portraits of Practice website you might want to take a look: http://lcdartstudio.com/portraits/

He outlines his approach to project based learning in an elementary general music setting.

Hi Jeannine,

I would be curious to know of any other resources you have found. I teach at a PBL school and I'm beginning the process of transforming my curriculum to more of a PBL approach. I like Phil Greco's site a lot.

Hi Kris, thanks for the reply.
I have found some resources. I have them collected online at livebinders.com. You'll need the password to open the binder. It is binder with information of the Common Core State Standards as applied to music education. I don't want to make it public just yet. However, if you email me at rubyjean9@gmail.com I will be glad to send the access code to you. I have yet to discover how to make it all work in 45 minutes once a week, however. Perhaps if we can get a few of us to work together, we can work it out! Hope to hear from you.
