Weigh In: Which Groups Would You Like to See on Edutopia.org?
Greetings --
I hope everyone is having a great summer, checking all those things off your to-do list, getting lots of rest, and having fun, too.
We've been heads down here, developing a series of tools that will help Edutopians connect, collaborate, and support each other more efficiently.
The first of these tools we'll release is called Groups. Groups will enable focused conversations around a variety of topics. Here's a good example of a group, and here's another.
Our groups will, as you might expect, focus on education and related fields. Some group topics might be Project Learning, or Professional Development, or Classroom Management.
Which brings me to the point of this post: What topics would be of interest to you, both as a reader and/or as a participant? We are putting together these groups soon, so it would be most helpful to hear what you would like to see.
Feel free to post here, or write me privately at community@edutopia.org. Hope to hear from you!
Thanks,
Betty Ray

I would love to see more
I would love to see more information and discussions on the children who are a part of inclusion. Most recently in my graduate course I completed a required reading on the brain. It was fasinating to read and learn about how the brain can be molded so to speak. The idea that learning or foundations are lost if not accomplished in the early years has been proven not to be true through research. So I would like to discuss and learn ways in which the inclusion child could benefit utilizing neuroplasticity in the classroom.
I am interested in all areas
I am interested in all areas of education but would like to specifically see a group focused on pre-k education. Always looking to network and share ideas with others in our field.
Adult Basic Education
Edutopia.org has been a great resource over the years. I would like to see connections for those involved in Adult Basic Education (GED, ESL, job readiness). Sometimes ABE seems to be the stepchild of educational systems. In many states, ABE falls under the colleges, but others (like my own West Virginia) continue to include ABE in the K-12 system. By federal law, ABE can enroll "adult" students as young as 16 years of age. I am sure that other ABE administrators and instructors could use a forum to share creative ideas for teaching basic skills to a diverse population of adults.
Special Ed. Forum
I am Dee, high school special education teacher in Carlton, IL. We are in dier need of a special education blog so teachers can compare programs and give support to fellow teachers. Some states are doing a fantastic job with special education services, and other states are in need of help due to poor leadership for many, many years. The priority is our students.
Schools putting concepts into practice
Hi Jill -
In October of this year, we will be launching a profile of a school in Houston called Yes Prep that puts many of these concepts into practice. There will also be four new groups available here on Edutopia.org, where you will be able to meet and network with the teachers, administrators and (hopefully) parents in the Yes community. This is part of a series we're starting called Schools that Work, and it's intended to do a "deep dive" into these great schools to find out how they did it.
We hope these new groups become a fertile ground for parents, teachers and administrators alike to hear how others are meeting their challenges.
Hope to see you in some of these groups! Please let me know if you have any other questions.
best,
Betty Ray

Groups - Schools who put this in practice
As a parent who is very interested in learning more about this...what about a group that covers various schools that are putting these concepts into practice...
Thank you thank you!!
There are some excellent suggestions, here! Thanks so much, and please keep them coming!
We will need folks to lead some of these groups (leading is actually more like facilitating - asking questions, inspiring debate), so if you are interested in that, please let me know that, too.
Thanks!!

collaboration
I like your idea.
possible group topic
Speaking of an area where many interests coincide, I would like to see a group on "how the mind works" This is the core of what teachers concern themselves with for each individual student, with every grade level, while planning for special learners and as they continue learning themselves. There is nothing predictable about this topic, though there are techniques passed down from experienced teachers, scientists and other creative thinkers.
For example, I hope to continue to learn about what part "mirroring" and mirror neurons play in teaching for teachers in the classroom. This is a topic much-discussed in Edutopia publications, and I would like to hear from teachers of their personal experience with this phenomenon and what they do in their own classrooms to set up a positive learning environment for students, teachers and by extension also for parents.
