Big Thinkers: Greg Mortenson on the Power of Education

Best-selling author and humanitarian Greg Mortenson speaks about the experience that led him to his mission to promote community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Editor's Note, 4/18/11: According to numerous press reports, including CBS's "60 Minutes" broadcast on Sunday April 17th, there are many inaccuracies in Greg Mortenson's books "Three Cups of Tea" and "Stones Into Schools." Edutopia is following these reports closely and will provide clarifications for our audience as soon as we know more.

Meanwhile, we suggest that readers proceed with caution before involving students in the Pennies for Peace program mentioned in this video. Pennies for Peace is a project of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute, founded by Mortenson. "60 Minutes" has raised questions about CAI's financial accountability.

Two years ago I started a pennies for peace program in my school. I felt it was important for my 8th grade students to know how kids the same age as them lived. This program was not allowed by my administration but only during passing period. No instructional time could be used to educate my students about the importance of education. I felt that my students saw their education as a chore not a benefit and I wanted them to think beyond themselves.

Excellent short film highlighting the impressive work of Greg Mortenson. I have just finished reading "Three Cups of Tea" which is just about the most inspiring book I have read in the last ten years. Well done to Edutopia for having championed the cause of "Pennies For Peace" and promoting the work of Greg Mortenson.
I would also recommend anyone who hasn't yet listened to go to the related section next to this entry and click the webinar that Greg did on Edutopia a few months ago.. again, as in all he does, inspiring.
Can I also make a recommendation for you to look at a wonderful interview with Greg that two young girls from Santa Barbara Middle School did which was uploaded onto Youtube and can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27P4GApHbBM It will compliment the video
on this page wonderfully!
