Finding Pearls of Wisdom: Take a Second (or Third) Look

Have you ever watched one of our video segments and seen a teacher do a super job of redirecting a frustrated student, or gotten an idea for your next science unit after getting a fleeting glimpse of a race car made from a balloon, some popsicle sticks, and four discarded CD-ROMs?

Hey, I've watched our videos over and over (OK, it's my job), so I often see something that I've missed on the first, second, or even third viewing! Over the next few months, I'll share my favorite video snippets that will feature these wonderful pearls of wisdom that are often overlooked because they are smack-dab in the middle of a longer video piece. When possible, I'll group the excerpts by topic and provide some context about what each snippet shows. You'll make your own observations, so share them. And, if you have your own favorite excerpts from one of our videos, let me know. I'll share them, too!

This week -- five pieces on music, dance, and the arts. Check in every day for a good idea or two. It'll put a spring in your step, a song in your head, and art in your heart!

Why Arts Education?

Research shows that education in the arts leads to higher academic achievement, fosters critical-thinking skills and creative problem-solving, and engages all types of learners. Arts education also builds individual character and self-esteem. And -- art is fun!

The Bay Shore School District in Bay Shore, New York, provides students with music education from elementary through high school. Even in times of budget crisis, the community has never thought of cutting the music program. District outreach efforts and frequent concerts at all grade levels also help build community support.
