Explaining the ABCs of Financial Literacy
San Rafael, California (October 15, 2008) -- The economy is the number-one topic of discussion in the United States and the world right now, and Edutopia introduces timely profiles of schools and teachers that are successfully addressing the ins and outs of financial literacy to students. Edutopia not only turns a spotlight on those schools and school districts on the cutting edge of this increasingly urgent issue but also provides the invaluable how-to details and tools that will spread these skills in the classroom. These profiles, accompanied by ready-to-use curricula, are featured in the October/November issue of Edutopia and on Edutopia.org.
This special report, "Financial Literacy: Making Sense of Dollars and Sense," which includes the Edutopia magazine feature "The Buck Starts Here: A Hands-On Approach to Personal Finance," investigates several U.S. high schools, including Montgomery Blair High School, in Silver Springs, Maryland, Miami’s John A. Ferguson Senior High School, and the California Academy of Math and Science, in Carson, California to see how teachers, economists, and entrepreneurs are teaching financial-literacy skills and projects to students.
Another key part of the report, which also includes three articles and a poll on Edutopia.org, is an Edutopia video titled Dollars and Sense: Kids Invest in Funds -- and Their Own Future, in which students at a K-8 middle school in Chicago hone math skills and learn practical, lifelong lessons in finance by managing their own $20,000 class stock portfolio.
