SAN FRANCISCO (June 14, 2005) -- Jennifer Sweeney, formerly a senior editor for Salon.com, has been named senior editor of Edutopia magazine, a publication for a new world of learning published by The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF). Sweeney will report to Editor in Chief Jim Daly, and will work at Edutopia's editorial offices, located at Skywalker Ranch, in San Rafael, California.
A seasoned journalist and editor, Sweeney comes to Edutopia after spending three years at Salon.com, where she managed the site's Life section and served as an editor in charge of news features. Her work frequently involved assigning, editing, and writing pieces for Salon.com, as well as developing special projects that involved well-known writers and artists. While at Salon, Sweeney created and edited an anthology titled Life As We Know It: A Collection of Personal Essays from Salon.com, published in October 2003 by Simon and Schuster.
Sweeney was a national writer for the Newhouse News Service from June 1993 through July 1995. Over the course of her journalism career, Sweeney has served as the deputy bureau chief for Newsweek's Los Angeles and London offices as well as a reporter for both the San Francisco Examiner and the San Jose Mercury News.
Sweeney graduated from Mills College with a bachelor's degree in journalism and foreign languages. She now resides with her husband and two daughters in Oakland, California.
