There is too much homework these days.
Everyday I have at least an hour of homework in each class. And that's if we're not assigned any one-day-notice essays or presentations.
However, in one of my classes (Marketing), I have a teacher who doesn't believe in homework. He mainly teaches the class in discussion, so students don't have a chance to zone out. We discuss, retain, and go beyond the book, bringing up our own theories and opinions. Every week or two we get an hour and half long test. It works well, and on average a "bad" mark is %70, with most getting %80-90. No one is failing.
Then of course, I have to go home and stress and do a mountain of work assigned from the other classes.
I'm against homework when it interfers with family activities. I'm against homework given by schools who punish kids who don't finish it by denying them recess. I'm against homework that is given by teachers who fail to inspire their students to learn during class time. I'm against homework that is given just because teachers think it will raise scores on standardized tests. I'm against homework that interfers with projects that self directed kids initiate on their own, at home. I'm against homework that is given by teachers who believe it helps make kids more responsible, especially when parents are already available to teach their children responsibility.
I'm all for "homework" that is given to children by their own parents. I believe that homework should be optional. Teachers should make it available, and parents should decide whether their children should do it. I believe that homework should be counted as extra credit for children who choose to do it, not as resulting in a higher grade, but as a comment inserted into their school records.
If you're doing 6-8 hours of HW per night... college or otherwise, you're doing something very wrong.
Buck up and meet your responsibility. Life is tough. School is the easiest and best part of your life. Its your life. If you don't want to do the work then don't do it. Try that with a job, of course and you won't have one long.
Cut the curriculum in half and there will be no need for homework. Students will be able to prove they have mastered a topic in school. Of course, all the time that students are working individually in school reduces the amount of time that new topics are covered. Unfortunately, our schools are judged based on information on standardized tests and students are simply not in school long enough each day to learn what the dimwits in government believe must be learned. For education to "improve" in this country parents and students must quit complaining and buck up with supporting teachers and doing the work required to succeed. Quit blaming teachers and schools for the failure of your children and embrace the responsibilities that come with parenthood. These include supporting your student(s) with homework but not giving them excuses to shirk their responsibilities. If you give your son/daughter a reason to make excuses they will never stop making excuses as long as they live. Take responsibility and quit complaining. Life is tough. Teachers try to prepare kids for life but many times, lazy or overprotective or uninterested or whatever type of parents prevent their own kids from developing the necessary qualities to succeed in life. Parents, take this advice: Care for your children and make sure no one abuses them but for their sake, let them fall from time to time. Everyone learns better from correcting their mistakes. If you fight all of your kids' battles, they won't know how to handle themselves when you're not around. You are doing them a disservice. Let your kid ride a bike without a helmet once in a while. If parents supported teachers instead of always taking the side of the students (who will likely say anything to avoid work or trouble) then students will understand they have no wiggle room to make excuses. You will find that your kid will do the work and do it better than you or the teacher ever expects because he/she will understand that if both Mom and Mr. Teacher believe the same thing... it must be good for them.
In conclusion, homework has helped kids improve in school for many years. Quit babying our kids and let's toughen them up and help them develop a strong sense of worth and responsibility.
Even though homework is important in the student life too much homework can put in the deep stress and case student to drop out.
Encouragement to students:
I hear you students. It wasn't too long ago that I myself was a student complaining of too much homework and a heavy book bag that just about tore my shoulders off. There were nights that I was in tears and thought I would have to give up on homework assignments. I encourage you to hang in there. I made it. You can make it too. I truly hope and agree with you that homework should be lessened and in some cases done away with, but not completely.
Please don't be so quick to blame the teacher. The amount of homework comes from teachers who are feeling the pressure of high stakes testing and the No Child Left Behind laws. It all boils down to time. We do not have enough time in the day to teach the curriculum that we are expected to. So to insure that none of you get left behind and to make up for the lack of time, we teachers assign homework. It is my hope that teachers would only give meaningful assignments of quality and not busywork. But I have a sneaking suspicion that most teachers do not want to give homework just to give it. We are feeling the pressure from the top and it sadly flows down onto our students. My suggestion is to do the best you can, manage your time wisely, and get ready to vote when your 18 so that you can let your voice be heard.
I'm doing my homework right now and i'm so stressed. I've never had as much as I'm having tonight and to be honest i just can't take it. i give up.
I have just moved to Ukraine from sweden and its hell here. Everyday i get homework to the next day, and if i fail a test i need to do like 10 extra asignments.
Sometimes i have so much that my weekends becomes a new schoolday, and it S**KS. Iwant a privet life to u know. And sometimes my homework dosent even help me in class because i was to tired after all the other homework last night. Some work dosent even give me education, it's just boring as H**L. I dont think homework schould disappear or so, just that it could be a little less of it so that i can do other stuff between 7-8 and 9-10 in the night. Atleast the teachers could coverse with eachother about how much work they schould give to work at home with. But if they dont like it, it's their problem. It's their job to learn us and not bore us. If they say no they dont do their job as teachers! Even learning is boring novadays!
i go to school even on weekends and the home work that they assigned makes u wanna get paid for it! its so much that at home only get about 3 hours to to do what i want before i go to bed!AH!!!!!!!!!
im in 10th to and get a lot of homework to and i dont even get nothing from it. so i think that teachers are really stuped by given as a ot od homework!!!!!!
