As a long-time advocate for the reform of teacher education, I was thrilled to see your report on innovative programs. I had special reactions to two of the cases. First, the Boston Residency program is a great idea being well-executed that provides the Boston public schools with a supply of well-prepared teachers who make a commitment to that system. Second, the new Stanford program which is such a dramatic improvement over the traditional and not very effective teacher preparation program that I went through many years ago at Stanford. Changing teacher education is always a tough challenge as I discovered as the head of the NEA's National Commission on Teacher Education and Professional Standtrds in the 1960's and then as the Associate Commissioner for the Bureau of Education Professional Education Development in the late 1960's and early 1970's. So its a encouraging to see some progress being made in this new era of interest in how teachers are prepared.
