I work in a system that has online grades. It is a wonderful tool if parents will access it and use it to help their kids. My pages are set up like a web site with assignments posted, due dates, grades, links for enrichment and remediation, a weekly newsletter, etc. Unfortunately only a handful of parents and students actually use the site (typically my A students and their parents). The kids who need it most either don't have computers or parents never bother to sign up for the free account to access their kids' grades. Shouldn't be surprising. "A" kids are "A" kids typically because they come from a supporting environment and they are encouraged to succeed. Apathy does not exist in a vacuum. Apathetic parents breed apathetic kids.
