Well planned project based learning should address the standards, just in a more practical and functional way. Special ed does it all the time when we do community based education where students are expected to make change, select appropriate items, display appropriate behavior, read signs, etc. Planning, shopping for and cooking a meal is an example of a "project" that c overs most standards.
Teachers who do theme based lessons are doing a form of project based teaching, especially if there are a lot of hands on components. Technology supports and enhances the learning.
There are a lot of ways to teach that are better than lecture-discussion or filling out worksheets. The difficult part is documentation, showing what you are teaching and how the students have learned without a lot od paper based data.
