Smart School Architecture

3 Key Points for School Construction Projects

1. The school district should develop a detailed programming plan for their new school in advance of any design work. There are non-architectural firms available for this purpose. The resulting document should lead to an educational specification document for the building, which the architect can then use to meet the needs of the school and its users.

2. Consider the impact of technology in today's schools. Instructional technologies (eg. networks, computers, projectors, interactive boards) now account for about 10% of school construction projects. These funds need to be accounted for before committing to a project or construction budget.

3. Allow the right amount of planning time before hiring an arhitect so that the school leaders may define what the needs of the school project are in writing. Spending money in advance for independent expertise in this area will more than pay for itself before the project is completed.
