Schools need to evaluate the menu in their cafeteria. Many children are eating a daily lunch that is high in calories and provides very few nutrients. Snacks that children are allowed to bring for snacktime at school need to be more closely monitored to be sure that they are nutritionallly beneficial to the children.
Encouraging parents to send healthy treats for birthdday and holiday celebrations would also be helpful. More discussion with children about their food choices and the benefits of exercise is also important. Also, teachers need to be good role models for a healthy lifestyle.
Finally, don't cut recess and daily physical education from the students curriculum. For many children this is the only time they get to play and get some exercise.
