I agree that there is not enough advance preparation in the job. I got lucky as I was able to step in as an "acting principal" when my former administrator was ill. In place of that, I would try to go to PTO meetings, School Council meetings and Administration Meetings (if they would allow it) to get a real feel that part of the job. In addition, most principals relish having aspiring leaders take on additional leadership roles...ask yours he/she may be really looking for you to take on some of those time consuming projects.
Above all, keep moving toward your goal of being a principal...I have just finished my first year as a principal and am so glad that I made the move. It is stressful and busy (also time consuming...) however, you really can make lasting changes! Good luck!
