14 does seem very young to declare a high school major. However, too many 14 year olds begin and end their freshman year with little or no direction. They float through their classes much like they float down the hallway...paying too much attention to the social aspects of high school and rarely thinking about credits, diplomas and signing up for the classes that will get them to where they want to be in 4 years. For this reason, declaring a major during the freshman year is a great idea. It certainly should not mean they are stuck with it. I certainly would encourage the kids to aim high when choosing a major, rather than aiming lower that their capabilities.
I do believe people have to visualize themselves being successful in order to believe thier dreams and strive for them. Declaring a high school major at age 14 may be all some students need to be self-motivated and encouraged to dream big.
