The Simpson County Community Action Agency Believes that After School programs are vital to the survival of communities. We operate programs that benefits families and children throughout Simpson County. One of the programs that have impacted the county in a life changing way has been the After School Program. We administer this program at 5 sites that are geographically located throughout the county serving 85 -100 children per day and getting first hand knowledge of the difference this program has made in the lives of these children. Unfortunately, we have only reached a small fraction of the children who need assistance with their studies. SCCAA’s desire is to provide a continual service that will prevent these children from becoming another statistic.
On an average, most students terminate their educational trek by 11th grade. Only 8.7% of the 58% of high school graduates in Simpson County annually attend college. In May, 2007, fifteen students from Mendenhall High School in Simpson County did not graduate because they failed one of the required state tests. Regardless as to who has the blame, the students, parents, system or all three; this is Unacceptable. It has also been noted that the lack of basic education contributes significantly to the unemployment rate in Simpson County. Over 27% of children seventeen and under are living below the poverty level.
We have to know that we are not the only ones who are fighting to help our children succeed academically. Thank you for your gallant effort to provide this service to all children throughout the USA.
