The comments concerning English Language Learners are appreciated. As an ESOL teacher who has the privilege of teaching many students who come to the US speaking virtually no English and who have not had much, if any, prior formal education, I am happy to celebrate their progress as they go through the process of second language acquisition, and am loathe to make them feel inferior just because they have not yet been given the time and patience needed to suceed. Just as I or any congressman would appreciate being given adequate time to learn a new language, I would so appreciate being able to maintain high but humane expectations for my students to achieve academic English proficiency.
