I too have abandoned text books in favor of writing and researching exactly what my students want to know and need to know according to state standards. My lessons are more varied, more practical and more family involving! Homework is no longer some page of words or questions, but a survey to be conducted or a measurement to be taken at home, or any other useful assignment that will augment long lasting learning.
This journey began in 1993 when our district had a huge bumper crop year of kids. There were not enough books to be given to each student, so I opted for a class set. I've used class sets ever since and now other teachers in our district do also. This saves our district a huge amount of money that can be spent on supplies and online subscriptions.
The students enjoy havng one less large heavy book to lug around.
