Textbook muddle machine

I remember vividly a grammar textbook I had in 1967, 7th grade. It was dark blue and was about a Venusian who came to Earth and learned English by eavesdropping on us natives. I credit this textbook for my life-long fondness for language. Reading this article made me sad that my 5th-grade son will probably never be positively affected by a textbook in a public school in his lifetime.
