Reading this post was very timely for me since, after reading Kati Haycock's article "Good Teaching Matters: How Well-Qualified Teachers Can Close the Gap," I have become convinced that the single most important factor in raising the level of our schools is to raise the level of teaching skills and knowledge. Ms. Haybock graphs her research that shows the higher-performing schools do, in facdt, get the higher-performing teachers. Now, this autohr's experience in Conncecticut confirm Haycock's thesis also -- that good teaching is the primary factor in raising standards.
