Carol Flexer: Decibel Diva
Audiologist who helps all students hear and be heard.

A year after she retired from her professorship at Ohio's University of Akron, Carol Flexer is traveling the country, giving lectures on her area of expertise: acoustic accessibility in the classroom and early intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing. She's also writing books. The first, Children with Hearing Loss: Developing Listening and Talking, Birth to Six, which she coauthored, was published in April, and the second, Pediatric Audiology: Diagnosis, Technology, and Educational Management, is slated for release in spring 2008.
Happily, Flexer is discovering a growing awareness of the issues she's exploring, as more and more school districts see the value of high-quality sound and begin to install it in their classrooms. "Educators are very interested in doing what is right for students," she says. "Once they have been made aware of issues, such as acoustic accessibility, many are keen to find out more, and then to implement change."
