As a first year teacher, I totally agree that your colleagues are a valuable resource. Not only have I asked for tips from teachers at my school, I have also asked for tip from other teachers in my department at other schools in the district. There are endless ways to implement instructional strategies so the more resources you tap in to, the more possibilities you can consider.

I loved a book called "Fires in the Middle School Bathroom", and got a lot from Harry Wong's classic "The First Year of Teaching". The best was having a group of colleagues to talk to, especially an experienced teacher who was OUTSIDE my school, so I could vent and problem solve with her. I hope and expect you will have a great first year of teaching. You are starting with a great attitude.

Ideas for connecting

Find something they do that you really like. Ask for their advice. Find things you have in common. Have an open hand, an open invitation to work together but let go of the outcome. In the end, if those strategies don't work, do your own thing and keep the door open. Their loss. It sounds like you have found other communities to work with, and that's the important thing.

I like that I can go to some of my colleagues and get suggestion but do you have any advice for when you have colleagues that are not receptive to working with others?

Thank you

I am in college right now and going to be student teaching soon, so I thank you for these answers. I really appreciate #4 since I am going to be a math teacher. Hopefully I will remember a few of these tips when I start to teach. Does anybody else have some advice from your own experience?

I love #2 "Step Out on Your Own and Try Something" I think it is so important to get out of your comfort zone and try something new - especially when it comes to using new technologies.

One great thing for novices is that there are more free online resources for them than at any other time in our history! Become a member of the online New Teacher Help community on edWeb.net or check out websites with free lesson plans, classroom management tips, or online professional development. It is so comforting to interact with others facing the same challenges to know that you are not alone!
