Reflect on Your Social, Emotional, and Character Development Work this Past School Year

June 24, 2011

Many of us working with social, emotional, and character development (SECD) make time for student reflections. But we don't always make time for our own reflections, and we should.

Below is a format I wanted to share with you all. It was used with SECD teams, coordinators, teachers, and other individual implementers and allows for one to reflect on his/her past year, and start planning for next year:

1. What are two aspects of your SECD work that you are proudest of, from the 2010-11 academic year?

2. What two things were most surprising to you in your SECD work?

3. What were your two greatest challenges/frustrations from this past year?

4. What are your primary SECD-related goals for the 2011-2012 academic year, taking into account:

The role of school climate, including assessment and school-wide improvement

How SECD is going to integrate with your anti-bullying prevention and response efforts, as this topic is mandated/focused on by an increasing number of schools

Who your main allies/resources/supports will be in your efforts in the coming year and how you will get them on board and working together

Feel free to share your reflections and/or plans with others here, and perhaps in return, you will get some ideas that you can use in the fall.
