I totally agree with you. There is alot of instructional time spent with just teaching social skills.

Thanks for your comment, Corrine. I spent 14 years in the field as a school principal and worked with 100's of teachers. Your point is well taken in that our students need support beyond classroom management. We frequently talk in new teacher chat that the classroom environment, how teacher and student, student and student interact with each other, is SO important and how this plays a role in the CM piece as well.
Thanks for your input!

Classroom Management is only half the issue

The challenge with the "classroom management" issue is that it only addresses half the problem. We assume that, if a classroom is disruptive, it's because the teaher doesn't have good classroom management skills.

However, what we fail to acknowledge is that too many of kids the are in schools these days lack the adequate social skills and character development that allows them to be "managed." As I share in my presentations on the topic to educators and administrators, this can lead to a "perfect storm" in the classroom.

For more on this topic, I invite you to visit: http://corinnegregory.com/blog/2011/08/30/classroom-behavior-management-... We really need to address both sides of the equation if we want to see real improvement.

Videos that have helped me with management

This year I have a very challenging group of students. I have found a lot of free videos on line that have helped me with managing and getting my students engaged in class. Here is the site: http://wholebrainteaching.com/videos.html (I am in no way related to the site.)

Even after 10 years of teaching, I am still testing out new things and getting better each year. I have learned the most from being able to observe other teachers with similar students, either in their classrooms, or through watching a video.
