I did not know about fotobabble thank you for the tip. I have and still do work with ELL students, and I know it can be difficult at times. SIOP strategies work well when working with ELLs. Use as much visuals and hands on with your objectives the more the better! Have students retell when you are able to make sure they understood your expectations. Watch their body language sometimes you can tell they really did not get your message, just readdress a different way. My passion is working with ELLs, because I have walked in their shoes and totally understand where they are coming from - I say do want every you can think of to help them get the concept. Sometimes being animated helps too!

Thank you for all of the tips for working with ESL students! I am a General Education Science teacher who is teaching a 7th grade, very low level pull-out resource room for the very first time. Not only do I have three or four students that are barely reading on a second grade level, but I also have two ESL students in my room who are very intelligent but have been placed in my resource room because of their language barriers. I am not Special Ed certified nor ESL certified so the strategies that you mentioned are extremely helpful! I especially liked the thought bubbles idea (I'm thinking using it as an activity to show relationships among different organisms) and the image detective. I was going to ask if any of these programs have iPad friendly Apps because my school does have sets of Ipads available for the resource classrooms. Also, thank you Monica for providing me with the Perfect Captions app, I am definitely going to look into it!!

You have great ideas. I have always struggled in the classroom with teaching ELL students. There is a paraprofessional at our school who works with ELL students in every classroom but there are so many students, she is pulled in 100 different directions. When she leaves the classroom, I often feel like ok now wht do I do? I usually show pictures to all of my students (ELL or not) when teaching vocabulary words. I really liked 2 of your ideas (Thought Bubbles and Picture Dictation). I am excited to use these in my classroom with my students. Thanks for sharing!

I love the idea of PWIM. I have a very diverse classroom this year. The majority of my students are gifted learners and I have five English Language Learners. I am struggling with ways to assess their understanding of the content that I teach them, especially in Science and Social Studies. I have been looking for ways that my English Language Learners can showcase their understanding with the knowledge they have. I will most definitely use this method within my classroom. In fact, I love all of these ideas. Thank you so much for providing such great detail on how to use appropiately. These are great!

Pics are good:) Wow, I am going to use this for my ELS students. If pictures can work better for even us who speak English then am sure it is best for those that are learning. Thanks you for this good idea.
