This has opened my eyes to seeing that children really need to hear their strengths in order to build up their self esteem.

What I really liked about this blog post was the acronym: HAPPINESS. This can relate to kids and give them something they can base their strengths off of. Like he said his daughter had gotten bullied because she wasn't the same as everyone else and didn't do the same things. He said that her talents were creativity. Just because you don't have similiar abilities and hobbies doesn't mean you should get bullied. Bullying needs to stop around America because it causes hurt to everyone involved.

Hi Fran,
We are releasing them one by one through the blog series. The next one is called "Ninja Mastery" regarding emotional management. The components are released every three weeks, so the series will be complete towards the end of April. Hope that helps. Thanks for your question.

I just joined Edutopia and came across your blog. Are the nine components available together somewhere? I have read the ones here but do not see them all. Of course, I just may be missing something!

Additionally, different parts of the brain light up and create new networks when kids are engaged, challenged, and excited about learning. One way to strengthen these connections is to create an emotional memory along with the intellectual.

This was such an interesting fact: "The brain at positive is 31% more productive than at negative, neutral or stressed." It makes sense, but data that proves it always helps :)

As always, thanks for the great posts Randy. Addressing a student's emotional and social well-being in education is something that's often ovelooked unfortunately. Your posts re-affirm why it should become more of a priority.

Elana, I was very happy to come across that statistic - it reaffirms what we know instinctively. As to bringing greater awareness to the importance of SEL, Edutopia rocks like none other! Thanks for your comment :)

This article has opened my eyes on so many levels. I would have never thought to put more focus on a childs passion and strength to get thru a hard day. I have witness bullying in the school and handle the parties involved. To help a student by tapng into their passion for something is GREAT. I will give this a try and see how it works...

Love to hear how it works in your class. Thanks for your comment.
