Thank you for the reminder that newspapers are an excellent resource for the classroom. I am always searching for text that can be used with students, especially text that is relevant and engaging. With Common Core, we need to increase the real-world connections, thinking, and applications for our students. The newspaper is a perfect way to do this, both for literary tasks and for math as well. I can print out articles for students if I want them to work interactively with the text and to utilize a common text. We can respond to the author with questions or write follow-up articles, and can also address the concept of author bias and point of view. We can write letters to the editor. We can analyze articles for connections and themes and can use them for research purposes as well. For math, I am thinking that students could do project based learning where they use advertisements etc... to perform a given task, perhaps analyzing sale items at different stores to determine which has the most savings, or outfitting a room with required items given a specific amount of money and parameters. Newspapers also provide graphic information and photographs that require interpretation and inferencing- also key Common Core skills. Students can discuss Social Studies issues found in articles, such as human rights and government, topics which require critical thinking and evaluation. While I appreciate and utilize technology in my classroom, and recognize its role in the Common Core, I myself require interaction with actual physical paper and text for full comprehension and learning. I'm sure that I have students who are the same.

Printed materials in the classroom is more effective and reliable.Children tend to be distracted and lost easily when reading from a computer. Technology is needed in the classroom but not for reading classes there is a time and place for everything.keeping the focus of our students is very important in the learning process.

I've been saying this for quite sometime and although I am a novice teacher I do believe there has to be a balance when teaching students literacy concepts and the basic skills that come with reading that only printed text can offer. I hate looking at a computer screen for a long period of time, however, I can stay in a book all day.
