Thank you for the additional resources. Right now, my students participate in 40 minutes of coding for 5 days a week, in 6 week rotations. We work initially in Blockly, and progress to Code.org for Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies, and Flappy Birds. Finally, we work into HTML with Karel at codehs. My site is also funding specific spots to progress to the paid version of codehs so that my flourishing students may move from html to java. I am learning along with my students and love it!

Lot of useful resources in this article. Thanks for putting it all together. Exposure of both software and hardware to kids is a great idea so that the kids feel more engaged in learning.

Here are couple of other tools/software that we find helpful.
Makey Makey (http://www.makeymakey.com) is a hardware kit that let students try simple projects. PencilCode (http://pencilcode.net) is a relatively new project that offers very interactive, graphical way to learn programming.

Thanks for this great list.

I have had some excellent responses from my pupils using SmallBasic. Its is a great stepping stone language between a visual introduction like Scratch and a purely text-based language like Python. The GraphicsWindow collection gives pupils methods and variables to use and see the results instantly. It really helps with motivation and engagement.

Vicki, Thanks for a great listing of all the available resources. I teach Scratch now and have been looking at some of these other resources. Just started with NxT and have a RaspberryPi which I haven't had time to figure out yet, but Christmas vacation is coming :) and I am looking forward to getting my Kano software (I backed it). But this article gives me a one stop shop to go to for additional resources.

Thanks for the great ideas. I am participating in Hour of Code with my students and was planning to use just the Tynker activities, but you inspired me with the idea of allowing choice. I'm giving my students the choice of three different platforms to play with this week. Instead of looking for a finished project, I am going to ask them to write a reflection on the activities and the process of learning to explore coding. I might also ask them to share a screen shot of something they did. Thanks for sharing!

There are a great ideas in your blog. I use GameMaker with my students and they can create very good games.
First we teach how to code, using RAPTOR, that is a flowchart interpreter. http://raptor.martincarlisle.com/
Does anyone know other application like this?
I will promote an hour of code initiative.
