Apple's elegant little iPod has gone further than any previous wireless auditory device to create a generation of pod people. Members of this new race -- and we count most secondary school students among them -- are aware that they can use their mp3 players to do a lot more than hear Madonna reinvent herself yet again. Savvy teachers know that lectures, lessons, and all manner of useful downloads are now available. There are educational riches are out there for podcast fans to find. Vote on the top three choices: The Education Podcast Network, National Public Radio, and Grammar Girl.

What do you think? Weigh in on the results.

EdTechTalk

I am so surprised that EdTechTalk is not included on this list. It is a huge network that is completely free and run by educators who are not being paid at all.

Although I am a webcaster there, that is certainly my top podcast network by far! I wish it was on the list!

EdTechTalk--Definitely!

You are so right, Vicki! EdTechTalk has such a wide variety of educational podcasts--there is something for any educator, I believe! I have learned so, so much from this network's shows, including WOW2.0, Making Connections and the ever-informative EdTechWeekly. I've recommended it to so many teachers too. I really think it's top-notch--it should be on the list!

National Public Radio is an excellent podcast but I won't place it in the "education" section for best podcast. This section should include a list of podcasts that are created for teachers or by teachers.

What's the best educational podcast?

Science Update podcast. This is an especially useful podcast because each story is short and classroom-friendly, and because the website has a link to actual, standards-aligned lessons based on many of the podcasts. Not many podcasts have lessons written for them.

A wonderful educational podcast for children's literature

Check out the new Chatting About Books podcast on ReadWriteThink's Learning Beyond the Classroom site. It focuses on the best in children's literature for ages 4 through 11.

Kidcast: Podcasting in the Classroom

I'm an avid listener to Dan Schmit's Kidcast: Podcasting in the Classroom. I'm surprised it's not on this list.

I concur, Viva EdTechTalk!

Consistently focused on classroom instruction, ETT is where it's at. NPR? I mean, I like John Merrow, but it's more about education policy than the practice of education.

New Teacher Hotline is solid, too.

Networks and Individual Podcasts

I too would have voted for EdTechTalk, especially because it is a collection of fine learning opportunities that tie directly into education with strong support for K-12 teacher learners like me. The Education Podcast Network is a strong choice because it is a network and therefore offers more than a single podcast for educators, although its format is not particularly inviting. I have just discovered CNN Student News but have been sharing the BBC World News for Kids with my class successfully for a couple of years. I adore NPR podcasts as an adult learner and occasionally share parts of these with students. We do listen to StarDate now and then as well.
